Eye Exams
Medical Eye Exams
Focused Eye Care offers medical eye exams to diagnose and guide treatment for eye diseases and injuries. Our specialized exams can uncover a range of general health issues that are reflected in eye symptoms.
About the Process
What to Expect
Medical and routine eye exams may include similar tests such as refraction and dilation, but medical exams are focused on treatment and monitoring certain eye conditions, such as dry eye, glaucoma or conjunctivitis. Your vision insurance may not cover medical exams, but your health insurance often does. Our brochure below can answer questions you may have about what insurance covers.
When are Medical Exams Needed?
Vision issues such as nearsightedness or farsightedness reflect how your eye is constructed and are not considered a disease or disorder. On the other hand, disorders such as dry eye and glaucoma – to name just two – are conditions that require treatment to maintain and monitor the health of your eyes. Medical exams are important to diagnose and guide the treatment for many eye diseases and disorders.
Technology and specialized treatments that we offer at Focused Eye Care
Focused Eye Care offers state-of-the-art medical exams and dry eye treatments including:
Our Optos technology provides a comprehensive view of the retina to detect potential diseases as early as possible. It also allows our doctors to monitor any previously found conditions in the back of the eye. The scan is quick, painless and easy.
This light-based technology is another tool in our arsenal to combat dry eye disease. Carefully calibrated light pulses are directed to the skin under eye to liquefy and release hardened oils that have clogged the Meibomian glands, which generate the tears essential to provide a protective layer of fluid on our eyes.
A Tear Lab is a diagnostic tool used to measure and evaluate the osmolarity (salt concentration) of a patient’s tears, helping to assess the health of the tear film and diagnose conditions like dry eye disease. By analyzing tear composition, it provides insights into tear production, stability, and ocular surface health.
The InflammaDry test is a rapid, in-office diagnostic test that detects elevated levels of the inflammatory marker MMP-9 in tears, which is associated with dry eye disease. It helps clinicians identify inflammation on the ocular surface, aiding in the diagnosis and management of dry eye and related inflammatory conditions.
The RETeval ERG test is a non-invasive electroretinography test that measures the electrical response of retinal cells to light stimuli, providing information about retinal function. It is useful for diagnosing and monitoring conditions that affect retinal health, such as diabetic retinopathy and other retinal disorders.
A Visual Field test assesses a patient’s peripheral (side) and central vision to detect any vision loss or blind spots. It is commonly used to diagnose and monitor conditions like glaucoma, neurological disorders, and retinal diseases by measuring the full scope and sensitivity of a person’s visual field.
Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is an imaging technique that captures detailed cross-sectional images of the retina and optic nerve, helping to assess their structure and thickness. It is commonly used to diagnose and monitor eye conditions such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy by evaluating the layers of the retina and the health of the optic nerve.
