Here are a few of the most common injuries or symptoms that could indicate you have a potentially vision-threatening eye emergency.
Reach us at 603-882-0311 in Nashua or 603-673-1330 in Milford.

Common symptoms of a scratched eye include pain, tearing and a sensation of something stuck in the eye. If the white part of the eye is scratched, you might see a blood spot, scratch line or redness. A scratched cornea, or corneal abrasion, can cause blurry vision, light sensitivity and headaches, potentially affecting vision permanently. A scratched cornea is an eye emergency and immediate consultation is essential.

Sports-related eye injuries are a leading cause of vision loss, with over 40,000 cases reported annually. These injuries can affect the eyeball or eye socket, and while many may heal without lasting damage, some result in irreversible vision loss. Protective eyewear prevents most of these injuries, but accidents happen. Focused Eye Care is experienced treating sports-related eye injuries or collaborating with your medical team as necessary.

Call us right away if you get chemicals in your eye or get something in your eye that you can’t get out, particularly if you have been involved with activities such as drilling, cutting or grinding. With the right care, injuries from a foreign body in the eye heal without complications. Long-term consequences of chemicals in the eye depend upon the chemical and how quickly you flush your eyes with water before calling Focused Eye Care.

Conjunctivitis is quite common and mild cases typically resolve in a few days. It is important to remove contact lenses at the first sign of symptoms and not wear them until the case of conjunctivitis is full resolved. Call us for emergency care if you experience changes in vision, a sensation of something stuck in your eye, blurred vision, light sensitivity, if your symptoms don’t improve within 12 to 24 hours or if they worsen over time.

Eye floaters and flashes can sometimes indicate serious issues like a torn or detached retina, which requires prompt treatment to prevent permanent vision loss. Contact Focused Eye Care immediately if you experience a significant or sudden increase in floaters or black spots, increased flashes, a shadow in your vision, vision loss on one side, floaters after eye trauma or surgery, or a gray curtain covering part of your vision.

Swollen and red eyelids can be a symptom of many conditions, including allergies, conjunctivitis, a stye or clogged oil glands. In these cases, the swelling may go away on its own within a day or so. When swelling and redness are a symptom of a more serious condition, you may experience fever, loss of vision, double vision or bulging of one or both eyes. If you experience any of these symptoms, call Focused Eye Care right away for a complete evaluation.
