Caring for Your Eyes

Caring for Your Eyes

The eye care professionals at Focused Eye Care encourage you to take of your eyes!

Your eyes help you negotiate the world around you, and are a primary learning tool. They are also very sensitive organs, so it is important that you take care of them. Here are some simple things you can do to keep your eyes healthy…

  • Take frequent breaks. Constantly looking at screens tires out your eyes.
  • Make a conscious effort to blink more. If you don’t blink, your eyes dry out.
  • Use a lubricating eye drop or tear replacement for dry or itchy eyes.
  • Choose a light screen with dark letters because it is easiest on the eyes.
  • Locate your document holder as close to the screen as possible.
  • Make sure there is no glare on your screen.
  • Take a high-quality fish oil supplement daily.
  • Place a Bruder compress on your eyelids for several minutes each day, several times per day, if necessary.
  • Wash your hands thoroughly.
  • Mix warm water and a small amount of a lid scrub solution recommended by your Focused Eye Care doctor.
  • Close one eye and using a clean wash cloth (a different one for each eye), rub the solution back and forth across the eyelashes and the edge of the eyelid.
  • Rinse with clear, cool water.
  • Repeat with the other eye.
  • Use a lubricating eye drop or tear replacement for dry or itchy eyes.
  • Use indirect room lighting coupled with lots of good task lighting to read the small print on things like prescription bottles.
  • Reduce glare with indirect lighting, lampshades and curtains.
  • Invest in 3-way bulbs, for more light when you need it.
  • Make sure you have a comprehensive eye and vision exam annually.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Sunglasses.
  • Have we mentioned sunglasses?

Your Focused Eye Care doctors recommend wearing sunglasses year-round. The sun can do more damage to your eyes, without you realizing it, than pretty much anything else. The glare of the sun off the beach in summer, or off the snow in winter doesn’t help, either.

Children are particularly susceptible to the harmful UV-A and UV-B rays from the sun, partly because they often spend more time outdoors than adults do.

Your sunglasses should block 75 to 90 percent of visible light, but 99 to 100 percent of UV-A and UV-B radiation. You should also avoid blue lenses, which studies have shown can lead to eye health problems later in life, including macular degeneration.

  • There are many brands of eyewear designed specifically for sports, and even for specific sports, such as basketball, swimming, cycling, hockey and more. You never know when a finger, a flying elbow or a bug or piece of road debris might be headed toward your eyes.
  • Safety glasses/goggles or face shields are a must for mechanics, woodworkers, carpenters, and even gardeners. Particles come off a power saw or a lawn trimmer at very high speeds and can lodge deeply in your eye. The doctors at Focused Eye Care recommend safety eyewear made from polycarbonate, the strongest material currently available.
